What is reframing? How can I use it? How will we practice it?

‘you control the situation, the situation does not control you.’

What is reframing?

Events do not have meaning. We give meaning to events. Our actions and feelings following events depend on the meaning we give to the event. Normally this meaning is given unconsciously. In NLP we can call this meaning of the event the ‘frame’. So if you choose to change the frame, you change the meaning for yourself and therefore your emotions and actions.

Change the frame * change the emotion * change the action * change the outcome

Example: feeling overwhelmed with a task. Reframe your thoughts from “I can’t cope with this massive task” to “I will break the task down into tiny little manageable chunks, do them one at a time and think about how proud I will feel when the task is finished”.

So what!

Some people may ask ”So what if you think positive thoughts, it won’t change the situation!”. Positive thoughts are not always enough to change a situation. However reframing the situation can put you into a powerful and positive emotional state. This positive state will help you and others to access their skills, imagination and motivation and then change the outcome.

Knee Jerk positive reframe

This is where you want to get to. If you reframe you own experiences in a consistently positive way, you will gradually learn an unconscious and automatic positive reaction to events.

Once you have developed this automatic positive reaction to events, it will be picked up by other people on an unconscious level.

The meetup

I will provide a handout with examples of reframing. We will do some quick exercises were you can write down lots of different reframes for some common events.
We will then work in pairs. One person describes an event, the other person then offers a number of different ways to look at the event. We will practise how to use the reframe technique in your business and personal life. We will practise using the reframe both on ourselves and with other people.

Robert Dilt’s Book ‘The Magic of Conversational Belief Change’ will be referred to.
