Are any of you curious about subliminal messages? Have you ever wondered if they could actually work in terms of personal change, inducing some new and wanted behaviors?

After doing some research about subliminal messages, I decided to test them, and developed a small software that does this thing.
I've been exposed to this software for 3 days so far,( it is running constantly on my computer while I'm working) and probably I've experience already some changes. It is really hard to tell since it is my own project and what I experienced might be biased by my momentary enthusiasm.

Anyway if any of you would like to try it and share with me your results, feel free to contact me.

Cheers,
Jan

Researchers have demonstrated a striking method to reconstruct words, based on the brain waves of patients thinking of those words.
The technique reported in PLoS Biologyrelies on gathering electrical signals directly from patients' brains.
Based on signals from listening patients, a computer model was used to reconstruct the sounds of words that patients were thinking of.
The method may in future help comatose and locked-in patients communicate.
Several approaches have in recent years suggested that scientists are closing in on methods to tap into our very thoughts; the current study achieved its result by implanting electrodes directly into a part of participants' brains.
In a 2011 study, participants with electrodes in direct brain contact were able to move a cursor on a screen by simply thinking of vowel sounds.
A technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging to track blood flow in the brain has shown promise for identifying which words or ideas someone may be thinking about.
By studying patterns of blood flow related to particular images, Jack Gallant's group at the University of California Berkeley showed in September that patterns can be used to guess images being thought of -recreating "movies in the mind".

Mindy McCumberFlorida Hospital
Now, Brian Pasley of the University of California, Berkeley and a team of colleagues have taken that "stimulus reconstruction" work one step further.
"This is inspired by a lot of Jack's work," Dr Pasley said. "One question was... how far can we get in the auditory system by taking a very similar modelling approach?"
The team focused on an area of the brain called the superior temporal gyrus, or STG.
This broad region is not just part of the hearing apparatus but one of the "higher-order" brain regions that help us make linguistic sense of the sounds we hear.
The team monitored the STG brain waves of 15 patients who were undergoing surgery for epilepsy or tumours, while playing audio of a number of different speakers reciting words and sentences.
The trick is disentangling the chaos of electrical signals that the audio brought about in the patients' STG regions.

To do that, the team employed a computer model that helped map out which parts of the brain were firing at what rate, when different frequencies of sound were played.
With the help of that model, when patients were presented with words to think about, the team was able to guess which word the participants had chosen.
They were even able to reconstruct some of the words, turning the brain waves they saw back into sound on the basis of what the computer model suggested those waves meant.
The technique hinges on plotting brain activity across a number of frequencies
"There's a two-pronged nature of this work - one is the basic science of how the brain does things," said Robert Knight of UC Berkeley, senior author of the study.
"From a prosthetic view, people who have speech disorders... could possibly have a prosthetic device when they can't speak but they can imagine what they want to say," Prof Knight explained.
"The patients are giving us this data, so it'd be nice if we gave something back to them eventually."
The authors caution that the thought-translation idea is still to be vastly improved before such prosthetics become a reality.
But the benefits of such devices could be transformative, said Mindy McCumber, a speech-language pathologist at Florida Hospital in Orlando.
"As a therapist, I can see potential implications for the restoration of communication for a wide range of disorders," she told BBC News.
"The development of direct neuro-control over virtual or physical devices would revolutionise 'augmentative and alternative communication', and improve quality of life immensely for those who suffer from impaired communication skills or means."

The ad will be run in a wedding suppliment as a quater page to coincide with the NEC wedding show in March.

Certification

We recommend you seek out certification accepted by either of the two founders of NLP, Richard Bandler or John Grinder. While there are many good NLP trainers and certifying bodies it is the easiest way of ensuring you’re getting the latest and very best NLP training.

We provide NLP Certification by the Society of NLP (SNLP), the original certification body formed by NLP Co-Founder Richard Bandler, through which you can be assured that your certificate and your skills will always be up to date and recognised throughout the world.

SNLP Certification is available at three levels; Practitioner, Master Practitioner and Trainer. We certify up to Master Practitioner Level and only Richard can certify to Trainer Level.

In order to provide a choice of options to our delegates we offer two levels of practitioner training; practitioner and coaching practitioner. As well as two levels of master practitioner training; master practitioner and business master practitioner.

While certification is easy and straightforward it is not automatic. You will need to take an active part during your training, demonstrate a degree of openness and an increased competence of the attitudes and techniques of NLP. This is required both throughout your training and at the final accreditation sessions.

Most delegates who come on an NLP courses regret not learning about these attitude and skill sets earlier.

In many ways NLP is about learning the most from any situation, and making the most out of whatever opportunity presents to you.

Therefore while you are likely to benefit immediately from NLP training the benefits accumulate significantly over time. The earlier you start and the longer you practice, the more benefit you get.

NLP and your Career

As a result of training our students have:

Gained significant career promotions

Improved stakeholder influence

Started their own successful businesses

Resolved conflicts within their businesses

Overcome frustrating barriers in their personal and business relationships

Gained greater confidence to explore and move towards their dreams

Increased their earnings

NLP is a practical rather than a theoretical discipline. It’s about producing the results we want in the quickest, most effective and most fun way.

Talking about NLP is not the same as doing it. A number of NLP’ers talk a good talk, but don’t seem to help people produce good results. Conversely some may not impress at first, but genuinely help their clients achieve excellent results.

The bottom line is : Can a trainer help you achieve the results you want? To find out you need to take action and in some ways test the trainer. Not only their knowledge, but their ability to help you achieve something important to you.

Like physical exercise NLP is a discipline that requires perseverance, and what we develop through NLP is a series of positive attitudes, rather than the ability to parrot scripts and phrases.

Yet structured content is the necessary starting gate through which we gain the skills and knowledge that make up NLP’s true value.

A) Steps in an NLP Intervention

The following is a recommended sequenced approach practitioners can use to assist clients in accomplishing their goals.

Beginning Frame

The frank establishment of any rules, expectations and boundaries involved in conducting an intervention or working relationship to avoid future misunderstanding - If you’re heading on a group expedition it’s recommended that you’re working from the same map!

The most important things to say may often be those we think of as being too obvious to need saying.

In NLP we question and draw attention to the assumptions and expectations that our clients, and we ourselves, bring into an engagement.

State

Triggering the appropriate mood for a context through physical change or mental preparation.

In NLP we train clients to manage their state through the careful replaying of memories, adjustments in their physiology (Posture, walk, hand gestures), and by addressing any unhelpful beliefs they may have regarding their performance.

We also train clients to recognise their own habits and the effect these may have upon on the states of those they interact with.

Outcome

Often the goals that we state in our professional lives differ from those truly important to us as rounded human beings. In NLP we help clients to phrase their outcomes in the most exciting and genuine terms.

What is most important in NLP is that goals can be articulated in sensory terms. This ensures that a goal is grounded in the physical world and has emotional resonance.

The purpose of a goal is to set a direction which is motivating. We are likely to refine the route and end point many times on our journey.

Rapport

An honest connection and open communication between two or more people. There are many types of rapport and they all have their advantages and disadvantages; If you want to fully connect to a person a state of rapport is appropriate, whereas if you don’t want to be influenced by somebody it is best to break rapport.

A basic exercise for exploring rapport in NLP is the natural process of ‘Matching and Mirroring’; Often people that click with one another begin to display similar postures, gestures and language traits. It is common in courses to play with matching each other’s behaviours to show how this changes the depth of our communication.

Current Strategy

Understanding what specifically you’re doing now to achieve, or to sabotage, your goals. It’s about being able to elicit information and the ability to determine the detailed sensory sequence that people go through in performing their every day actions.

In NLP we teach clients a set of questions to uncover the often unconscious processes that individuals go through in completing any behaviour or task.

Technique or Task

What will take you from where you are now to where you want to get to? NLP provides numerous tools for helping a client acquire any internal and external resources required to achieve an outcome.

You can read more about NLP techniques by clicking the link in the other resources section at the of this eBook.

Future Pace

An imagination exercise that develops a detailed connection between the session and the action needed in the real world to bring about the desired action.

Imagining carry out the next smallest activity that, when successfully completed, will move you forward towards your goal is a key action in achieving excellent results.

End Frame

Concluding and closing an interaction in reference to the issues raised in the beginning frame; it reinforces the positive elements of the session in a way that clients are likely to remember and put into action.

While you are closing this particular interaction it is important to emphasise that the learning will continue out in the real world.

B) Other key NLP elements

These factors are of importance throughout all stages of an intervention.

Values

A label for that which is important to you at a core level. These may be very different to corporate values can tend to be generalised and superficial.

A discussion of a client’s values will make it easier for them to connect with what’s important to them.

Value Rules

These define the criteria by which your values are met in the outside world.

In NLP we get explore clients to explore what has to happen for their values to be met in real life. Let us say for example that a client says that a key value for them is ‘trust’, we would get them to explore the similarities and differences in a situation in which they felt trust, and one in which they did not.

The more they consciously understand what is needed to meet that value, the easier it will be to achieve it.

Beliefs

An underlying assumption about the world which either helps or hinders you in achieving some outcome. NLP training will enable you to explore ways of changing your beliefs when you decide it is in your interest to do so.

Senses and Submodalities

All of our knowledge and experience is acquired and organised through our senses. Understanding how we react to those experiences is a key for personal change.

In NLP our senses are sight, hearing, feeling, taste and smell. Submodalities are identifiable qualities of these senses – such as light and dark for sight.

One NLP technique for coping with unpleasant and hindering memories is to change the way they present themselves within our minds. For example, we may ask clients to change the colour of their memory, to push it into the distance, or to make any voices comical. This then changes the effect it has upon their state, potentially turning a once unpleasant memory into something neutral or even funny.

Hypnotic Language

In NLP training you will learn to unlock creativity and gently lead through language borrowed from the world of hypnotherapy.

Time

NLP can assist in exercises that help to look at events and experiences from different points in time and perspectives of time, which is very valuable in planning and rehearsing for the future.

Stories

Stories have a unique structure which conveys complex information about ideas, states and strategies very effectively through stimulating both our conscious and unconscious thinking. Your NLP training will enable you to construct and deliver stories to deliver the messages designed to achieve your outcomes.

Profiles

In NLP, ‘Meta Programs’ are used as a way of predicting a person’s general preferences for relationships to people and events and can be used to increase rapport, influence and persuade.

Modelling

This is the heart of NLP; the process of systematically coding and transferring attitudes and strategies from one person to another – Emulating characteristics that successful people have shown in order to get results in defined areas - combining both logical and intuitive approaches.

You will learn a variety of modeling approaches on an NLP course.

A side-effect of modern society, technology and the current state of our economy is that we are surrounded by a daily noise of unhelpful information, and attempts to manipulate our behaviour in ways that may not be useful to us.

In order to be both outwardly successful and inwardly at ease in this modern climate, an individual must decide what is right for them and filter out inappropriate influences from their environment. This requires a strong sense of personal direction - An area that many have little opportunity to explore and discuss

NLP gives us a toolbox of attitudes and strategies through which we are able to define our own goals and experiment with the workings of our own minds; Our relationship to those around us, to our own memories and to our physical selves.

NLP helps us develop resilience, both in ourselves and the people we work with and you may quickly find that it gives you many ideas as to how to literally make someones day (and life) through communication skills and state management.

What is NLP?

NLP combines aspects of behavioural psychology, linguistics, hypnosis, modelling and common sense to determine and explore the attitudes and traits of top performers. It then provides a series of techniques to help individuals to integrate and apply these same patterns into their own daily lives.

Thousands of people around the world use NLP as a powerful catalyst for personal change and to improve business performance.

The creators of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, undertook extensive studies of people who were highly skilled and respected in the field of human change through which they derived the toolkit that you can learn on a Practitioner course.

Applications from this initial work are now found in many areas of personal performance development including coaching, sales, leadership, change management, influence and impact.

Personalities such as Tony Robins, Derren Brown and Paul McKenna use aspects of NLP to motivate and entertain, and top athletes use refined mental rehearsal techniques to reach the highest levels of performance.

You can even find applications of NLP in relationship, dating and seduction advice.

We try to keep the blog mostly to content pieces of interest. But every once in a while we need to make a living too, so we want to make sure you know about upcoming trainings…

Both these trainings are real opportunities for personal transformation. If you’re a therapist or coach, you will also be learning methods you can use in your work with others. Both are with exceptional trainers and training teams, and tend to draw a warm and friendly community of learners/explorers. If you haven’t been to one of our programs in Colorado, we invite you to find out for yourself.

Earlybird Discounts available until January 31, this coming Tuesday. (Note: Southwest Airlines often has the best fares to Denver, and you have to go to the southwest.com website to find them.)

Core Transformation 3-Day Training
with Tamara Andreas
March 2-4, 2012
Boulder, CO

People continue to find benefit from the simple yet profound Core Transformation process. You’re welcome whether you’re completely new to this method, or if you want an opportunity to deepen your experience and skills with this method. One can never have too much “inner peace,” “presence,” “love” or “oneness with all.”

There are many meditation practices for people seeking these qualities. What’s unique about Core Transformation is that it offers a dependable way to experience them directly and rapidly through the doorway of our difficulties. These “Core States of being” naturally transform troublesome areas of our life.

Note: you’ll also learn a second method, Aligning Perceptual Positions, that is rarely taught, yet also quite powerful. An unusual set of questions enables us to notice how we have unconsciously “set up” our experience of others and the world. The process leads to a natural integration/wholeness that increases our resourcefulness in relationships.

People usually tell us after doing this process, their inner perception is clearer and richer (their inner images are usually more accurate and also more “positive,” troublesome voices either melt away or transform.) Occasionally someone tells us they recover hearing, or their vision spontaneously improves.

Metaphors of Movement: 4-Day Training
with Andrew T. Austin
April 20-23, 2012
Boulder, CO

Our last blog post gave you an example of Metaphors of Movement in action. However, there’s a LOT more to it than can be conveyed in a short blog. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the full terrain of this method as part of our friendly and diverse training group. You’ll observe Andy doing many demonstrations, and have lots of time for practice and discussion. Andy continues to refine how he uses this approach to get better and better results. It’s always fun to learn from/with Andy. Connirae, Mark & I are very excited to be participating again and deepening our own abilities to use the method.

“This training is certainly ‘leading-edge’ information. My money was well spent. I felt the marketing material did not do the training justice. Those who did not attend missed something very valuable.” — Jessie Milan, Denver

Free Client Sessions with Andrew Austin
On April 24 (Tuesday), Andy will be doing four client sessions in Boulder. This is an opportunity for a free session, in exchange for agreeing to having the session videotaped for possible use for a learning material or product. Andy will consider working with anybody, however is particularly interested in working with someone who has nightmares or depression. He will give priority to people who aren’t already familiar with his work. If you’re interested in one of these sessions (or you know someone else who might be) contact Andy directly by email to find out if it will be a fit.

Does anyone have some ideas about using cold reading as a tool for B2B sales prospection?

Here's the context:

I'm into a new project for my company. I'm prospecting for new customers. This is Business To Business prospection, on pretty big ticket items (50K€), mostly directed to upper management of medium sized industrial companies.

Basically I've got a big list of phone numbers of companies who I phone up to try to sell them our products/services. I'm having a lot of fun doing this I must say.

The phone number is simply the companies public phone number, so first step is to speak a line which gets me from whoever answers (secretary) to someone in upper management (best is the big boss, and if not the financial director, commercial director, production director, ...).

This step is working OK for now, I usually manage (after many tries and recalls) to get into contact with someone worth talking to.

Next step is tougher... I get a few minutes on the phone to explain what we do and to get the director interested so he accepts to meet me.

Until now I've set up a speech which cuts through from something pretty objectable (too expensive, we already have that, don't have time for this, ...) to something pretty much "to good to be true" and un-objectable.... with a graduate process. The idea is that they can often object to my initial proposals, but they basically can't object to the last ones.

However, this isn't working as good as I'd like... I think I need to have something that sounds more specific, my speech is too generic.

So, this lunch time at the café I suddenly though that what I needed was some super B2B phone "cold reading" capacities to be able to be specific about what my prospects' problems are and what he's looking for to fix them, only then can I formulate my offer in a pertinent and specific way (basically make sure that my offer sounds like the answers he expects to his problems).

This sounds pretty much like cold reading to me.

Any thoughts?

Recently I was exasperated by someone who didn’t keep what I thought was an agreement between us. But “Exasperation” doesn’t fully express the intensity of the confusion and disorientation I felt when that happened, so I decided to explore it using Andy Austin’s Metaphors of Movement process. Connirae and I have been having a great time with this model, both as a way of helping others find solutions to difficulties, and also on occasion guiding each other.

I explained to Connirae, “It’s like they pulled the rug out from under me.” My image was that I was standing on a small rug, about 3 feet wide, and 6 feet long. Someone else was holding onto the end in front of me, and they jerked it literally out from under me. When that happened I tumbled backwards, flailing, into a tank of some kind of fluid that had been beneath the rug. The broken agreement was disappointing, but tumbling and flailing into the fluid was what created my confusion and disorientation.

Connirae said, “So you’re a person who stands on your agreements.” “Definitely!” I said. This was true both literally and figuratively. It’s always been important to me to keep my commitments.

At first I didn’t see a way out — except for the other person not to yank the rug!

At his last training, Andy Austin said, “We usually see clearly what other people can do to “solve” their metaphoric situation, but we often don’t see what we can do in our own.” This is the value of working with a partner, and it certainly held true for me in this situation. Connirae suggested that I explore taking a step to the left, or to the right, or back — just off the carpet — to see what that would be like. “You’ll be standing by your agreements instead of on them,” she said. Initially, I didn’t like the idea. It wasn’t being true to my commitments in the way I was familiar with, but I wanted to explore it.

What if I “stood behind” my agreements? What if I “stood by” my agreements? In my metaphor, there was just solid ground on all sides of the rug, so this had potential. As I tried out these different ways of “standing” within the metaphor, I decided that standing behind an agreement fit best for me. I could do this with integrity, and my position was definitely more stable. (I could also have explored what it would be like to “sit on an agreement” or be more ready to “leap aside” if the rug was pulled out, etc.)

When I tried out that new stance in the real-life context of the agreement that hadn’t been kept, it felt much better, because I remained standing when the rug was pulled out. Without the flailing and splashing, and the resulting disorientation and confusion, it was much easier to focus on what to do about the broken agreement itself.

As most of us do with our problems, I had been feeling like a victim, and focused on what someone else did, rather than on what I was doing. Within the metaphor, I could quickly realize what I was doing, and experiment with more useful alternatives. It is one thing to know, as a general principle, that I can only really change what I am doing, and that if I feel like a victim, I am probably missing what I can do in a situation. It is quite another to explore a metaphor, and find out what I can actually do differently.

One of the really lovely things about using Metaphors of Movement with a client is that I don’t have to know anything about the real-life event that the metaphor represents.

Full Disclosure: It’s not always as easy to find a metaphoric solution that works as in this example. But this time it was.

Have you ever experienced someone breaking an agreement with you? . . . If you ask the question, “What is that like?” what is your answer?. . .

And if you’d like to, you can go on to explore your metaphor in more detail as I did above. Does anything become clear to you that you might prefer to do differently?

You can share your answer by making a comment below.

Some of my classes are preparing for a presentation this week and I wondered if anyone had some ideas for what they could do to prepare for it. Kind of activity based activities. There's a Dilts book out I've found but I won't get it quick enough as the lessons start on Tuesday. I've got some stuff for nerves I was just wondering if anyone had any good tips for making a good presentation and also preparing for it. For example I know the Disney strategy is in the Dilts book but i'm not quite sure how to use it for the preperation part. Any ideas?

What a great language pattern!
Haven’t you heard something "like this" many times about the profession you choose to work in?
Yes, I’m sure we all have. It IS unfortunate that, to this date, there are no FORMAL
scientific studies performed and evidence that is DOES WORK. I know Robert Dilts is accumulating resources and money to put together clinical trials for NLP. So until THAT day arrives, hopefully soon, we all have to wait and continue to hone are craft/profession.

The real question here is NOT whether it works or not, it’s DO YOU WORK IT?
It’s about CONFIDENCE in yourself becoming a competent trainer, KNWOLEDGE about what you're communicating, and almost MOST importantly, MARKETING your services to your specific niche and/or community.

Can I ask you a question, WHAT marketing tactics, tips, & strategies are YOU using to promote your NLP, hypnosis or coaching business in todays (Jan. 2012) market? What could you share with everyone about what has worked best for YOU?

So here's your question; what ONE piece of advice would you have given yourself IN THE BEGINNING knowing what you know now???

If you'd like to lend your thoughts or ideas about the true, pure NLP you originally learned,
I'd love to hear from you. We're compiling a new book about the true nature of NLP.
What chapter titles should I include?
What should be the MAIN focus to teach beginngers?
What would make it EASY-IER to read?
What would YOU want to see it it? (visual question)
Any other ideas?
