NLP | What Stops Change? Thoughts and Ideas

NLP | What Stops Change? Thoughts and Ideas

As a part of exploring change and success it's worth exploring what stops people changing. Some thoughts:

1) The change isn't in the individuals best interest (or the best interest of those closest to them)
2) The individual hasn't connected with the benefits of changing over time
3) The individual hasn't connected with the implication of 'not changing' over time
4) The individual doesn't have an effective internal strategy for changing (imagination, sensory strategy, internal dialogue, anchors etc etc)
5) The individual doesn't have an effective external strategy for changing (behavioural strategy)

In addition these may be compounded by:

6) Too many other priorities (no time)
7) Crises which take 100% of indivuals attention away from the change
8) They don't put the effort in to start and maintain the momentum that any change requires
9) They don't get external validation from others, and become demotivated
10) They celebrate too early and loose focus before the change habituates

Luckily good strategies in 4) and 5) can inoculate against 6) to 10) above,

All thoughts welcome,

Help with Bold Kid

Hi i have a 12 year old nephew and over the last few years
he's grown more and more bossy. He basically blackmails or
uses force to annoy you till he gets his way. Some examples
are when he wants people to not talk, he says you need to
shutup. And he keeps yelling that until they do. Also he's
picky about the way people eat, and also just acts bossy
about doing misc things like put this away or get me this,
or come here. But he is most bossy about wanting people to
shutup, i guess since that's the hardest order to give.

Main problem is he thinks he HAS to get his way and also he gets really angry if that doesn't happen. He can really get on everyones nerves after a while, and his parent hasn't shown any effort to get him any help. Now I can't do much as far as NLP goes because he doesn't cooperate. He has ADHD so it's hard for him to relax into a trance state, and also i think his mind has some built in defense mechanism to not change and keep his anger going. I'm thinking there were times he got really angry in the past and the same ppl who got him angry probably told him to not get angry and I think he decided to stay angry to go against them. So might be one reason why he has a more serious anger problem. Or he's just comfortable being angry.

Anyways the anger is a problem too but I'd like to try to solve his other problem of giving orders and being bold about it. Because that triggers a lot of his anger usually. Now since he doesn't cooperate, the only idea I can think of is when he's sleeping, I can do some kind of affirmation or something. Have it play over a device, and fade in over a long time and repeat a simple message. Like "the world does not revolve around me". Or something, only problem is I don't think I can use the word not in there because of how the subconscious works;\.

Going to think of some more possible affirmations. But do you think that could work? And please give me some affirmations you think might be helpful. Need just the right wording to counter his thinking or belief. I can't just say "You respect people's ability to make their own choices", because his belief might be that his needs are more important than yours and it's not about disrespect, more about seflishness or a sense of entitlement. I think it's the latter, right now I'm trying to put myself in his shoes and trying to think what I might respond to.. maybe like "caring about others makes you feel good" or "sometimes it's important for other people to get their way instead of me"

“Master Sock Puppeteer Outed?”

I've been following various discussions on various websites about NLP and its validity. Someone recently posted some information that may at last explain a number of the sock puppet postings around the web, including this site. Since it was Andy Bradbury who told me about the discussion, I'll let him do the "outing"...

What is Personal Power?

Hello guys,

After a conversation on a different thread a fellow poster commented that he thought the concept of personal power was a flawed one. I think he meant in relation to building self-esteem but I will leave him to clarify that.

We've chatted a little and may have different concepts of this idea but I thought it would be interesting to start a thread and find out what YOU all think.

Here's my basic starting point:
'Personal Power' is the ability to use your resources (thinking-emoting-speaking-actions) to achieve the ends you desire.

Personal power starts with re-claiming ownership of these 'powers' or tools of consciousness.

Essentially personal power is having an acknowledged ownership of your T-F-S-A and being able to use and direct them at will to change things, inside and out.

I postulate, therefore, that personal power is essential to building self-esteem and self-confidence because if you don't feel/believe you own your T-F then you won't be able to acknowledge ownership of the states and frames necessary for building self-esteem.

I've created a product to help with this at Confidence and Esteem Building Audio - but what do you think? Agree? Disagree? Have a different view?

Philippines Hostage Event and NLP

I have been following the news about this tragedy happened in Manila upon the Hong Kong tourist. Manila bus siege | World news | guardian.co.uk
And it makes me wonder what if an NLPer was in that bus, would he/she
  1. Go inside and scare the shit out of himself;

  2. Smile and realize right away that this an an unprecedented opportunity to practice handshake interrupt and take away his gun while telling him to "Close your eyes, just sit back and relax" and turn to other frightening tourists, "because I do not know when is the last time you had a nightmare and wake up remembering nothing....is important now just go into sleep and just realize how susceptible to suggestion one is during emergency situation because, when you wake up, you could have make NLP a head line in every major newspaper the next day."

  3. hesitate whether to do 1 or 2.;)

I Don’t Even Know What NLP is Anymore

If I take John Grinders recommendation that NLP is first and foremost a modeling technology. Technology either developed or stumbled upon by Bandler and Pucelik. By John Grinders own admittance the coding of the technology is more of an "art" than an agreed form of re-presentation to be communicated to others with the intention of those others performing at an approximate level as the original modelee. I can honestly see nothing logical or NLP ish about some of John Grinders chosen influences for the New code - Dan Casteneda, Tito Sampos for example. Yet there are aspects of New code that are invaluable and forward thinking. And, there are aspects of other schools which are also invaluable and forward thinking now looking back such as Christina Halls take on time. I'm not looking for some either/or arguments here (please don't and please be respectful), more of a kind of who/what criteria gets to decide what is NLP is and what isn't NLP when its blatantly based upon modeling, and then subsequent codifying of the original model. Some of the "original" NLP stuff wasn't even based on modeling such as eye accessing cues... If I modeled Shinzeng Young would meditation then be a part of NLP? Is NLP a modeling technology or is it more to do with the coding of it that's important after modeling based on some sort of criteria or both or what? What if I modeled John Grinders coding ability would that solve the whole issue?

NLP Practitioner – Course Duration

Good morning! I am currently searching for an NLP practitioner course and figured out that most of them are offered for either several days in form of a crash course or for a year – once a month (Saturday and Sunday) … which approach, if I may call it this way, would be a better one in your opinion?

Thanks a lot in advance! I do appreciate your answers.

Any Ideas for a Newcomer ?

Hi everybody

Im here because I m full of curiosity to explore this mysterious NLP. I m from a country where it's hard to find books , so I decided to try the net. I already read a book of Anthony robbins and the translation to Arabic was so bad.
can you guys help download any books .
I saw on amazon : magic in action, tranformations, frogs into princes, changing beliefs..
thanks in advance
your friend Mag

dont forget I m a beginner

Greetings

I have been studying NLP from books, videos, internet sources est. for the past 4-5 months - so I'm getting the idea! I'm basically here to learn from others and acquire a variety of views, and it looks like a great place to ask questions. I am on the stepping stone to start attending occasional classes (perhaps @ NLP Academy) because I need some practical work big time!!

Hope your all well. S

Stop, Notice Here

Hi guys,

I have been following this extraordinary forum for quite a long time and I think it is only natural that I now want to contribute my part to this community by providing my own perception about this wonderful piece of knowledge, NLP, because, and I quote Robert Anton Wilson, who, by the way, I think every NLPer should study about,
Quote:

"Intelligence is the capacity to receive, decode and transmit information efficiently."

The Secret of Business Development

I've clarified some of my thoughts on business development over the past couple of months and I thought I'd share them. Feel free to agree, disagree or something between.......

This is particularly for anyone starting an NLP related business, but I suspect is relevant to most business development.

Firstly being able to develop business is probably the key skill in developing an NLP and coaching business. It's my view that it's so important for anyone who wants to start an NLP business to start at the same time they invest in any training. You don't need to wait until you have the certificate!

And training and (coaching) isn't something to invest in just at the start, it's something to invest in throughout your career. The better and more experienced you get the more you'll get out of good training and coaching. When you're experienced you'll even learn stuff from bad training and coaching!

If you coach you'll learn as much, if not more from your clients as from your training, therefore the sooner you get clients the sooner your skills will improve. And the higher calibre clients you have the more more important stuff you'll learn from them.

In a way it's as important to select good clients as it is to select a good trainer and coach!

Your vision

If you're an NLP'er you're already good at this. Create you're own vision of what you can see, hear, feel, taste and smell when you've really succeeded in all this. How does it really benefit you and those around you?

If it's not motivating, change it.

Where to start

Its useful to answer these (sometimes very difficult, but empowering whenyou've done it) questions as specifically as possible:

Any answer is better than no answer,

1) Who specifically are your ideal customers?
2) What are you offering them?
3) How do they benefit from what you're offering
4) How can you reach them effectively?
5) What will all this do for me

if you can't answer all five questions you have a bit of a challenge on your hands. However remember to you can ask all those around you for help. Just make sure in the the answers you come up with in the end are yours.

To add a bit of confusion to this process answering one question may change your answer to the others. For example if you can't 'reach' your ideal customer, should you go for different customers who you are easy to reach?

(I'm not answering this question for you)

How to generate business

On observing the successful people around me I've noticed they tend to get business in four different ways.

All require skill, consistent action and time (if you know differently please tell me). Very few people are really good at more than one, although they may employ people to help them on the ones they are less good at.

Neither is 'right' or 'wrong'

1) Attraction

Create content (articles, blogs, pr, video, podcast, white papers etc etc) that will attract the people you want and post / publish it in the appropriate places. Includes SEO and Social Media etc,

Disadvantage: You may have have to be noticed by 10,000's of people to attract 1. Takes time.

Advantage: When potential clients approach you they have already nearly always qualified themselves as good prospects

2) Hunting

Decide who you want as a customer and contact them, includes cold calling and much of traditional selling

Disadvantage: Many people simply don't like doing it

Advantage: The results are much more under your control than the other approaches

3) Nurturing

Getting to know people with influence and budget and investing the time to develop trust and understand their map of the world. Only selling when you have something that is genuinely to their benefit.

Disadvantage: You have to know people with influence and budget, who are happy to get to know you!

Advantage: Requires less speculative work than the other approaches

4) Partnering

This is normally in addition to 1), 2) and 3) above, where you agree to mutually support a colleague (or organisation) it could be as simple as working with someone and agreeing you will promote each other at every opportunity. It's much more believable saying someone else is 'brilliant' than saying it about yourself.

Disadvantage: At least one of you has to be already good at 1) 2) or 3)

Advantage: Two (or more) people that work together are more effective than working on your own

How to get better at business development

Take action

1) Ruthlessly stop wasting time on any activity that does not measurably (or at least plausible - sometimes you need faith) generate business
2) Develop a basic system to follow and follow it
3) Keep asking yourself and those around you A) How can I increase my output (be more efficient) B) How can I be better at what I do (be more effective)
4) Get a coach

Mindset

I'm quoting Marshall Goldsmith on some beliefs successful people have:

1) I have succeeded
2) I can succeed
3) I will succeed
4) I choose to succeed

Very useful if you're doing business development....

Where to Start

The secret?

If you're going to run a successful NLP related business you're going to developing business for a long time. Choose an approach that you'll enjoy and have the potential of becoming really, really good at.

Start noticing what others that are already successful are actually doing (or were doing when their business was at the stage yours is now), which may be different from what they say they're doing. See what you can do that's better.

And if don't like this stuff maybe business development is not for you, for the moment anyway. If you like it you'll be really good.

Have fun!

All thoughts appreciated,

Looking to Learn

Hey guys,

I'm relatively new to all of this, I have tried out NLP before, and used it to successfully quit smoking.

At the moment I am interested in researching NLP training, so I'm looking to find out what courses there are out there, in Ireland or the UK, what course would be best suited to me, which trainer would be best to go with, and all that.

I look forward to exploring the site and NLP.

cheers!

p.s. if anyone can give any few pointers on how to navigate the site, threads worth checking out for noobs etc, it would be much appreciated

Spelling and Reading with a Poorly-state’d Child

I've had amazing success with bringing NLP into my tutoring practice with kids ranging from 10-19, and now I've encounter a child that poses a real problem to me. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

"Tim", like most of the kids I end up working with, has spent a long time being told he's a slow learner. He's going into 6th grade now and he reads at maybe a 1st/2nd grade level. His vocabulary is excellent.

In terms of modalities, he doesn't demonstrate any visual distortion internally or externally, but his father's left eye was damaged by a car battery and now it doesn't move and is mostly blind. I think this is important. On a related note, his handwriting is not just sloppy, it's chaotic. This is the difference that, in my experience, makes the difference. There is no discernible consistency to his letters. Ask him to write a word multiple times and you will see it in as many different ways.

I suspect there's something strange with his auditory, and the decoding specialist he saw when he was seven, I learned, thought the same thing. He seems to be able to hear just fine, comprehending whispered commands, but his diction is horrific. He often outputs a slur of words. This suggests to me that that's how the words sound internally.

When writing, he maintains a resourceful state, but when asked to read even very simple words, even the words he's just written, there is no question that he regresses to a very, very young age. His physiology shifts into a fetal position, and the further I coax/encourage/demand/negotiate/etc him to sound out a word, the deeper and deeper he goes. His voice becomes childish and eventually, he sounds like little more than a baby. It is truly concerning. With easy words, this abreaction doesn't get far before he gets the word. With more difficult words, even if I supply him with the phonetics for each part of the word (e.g. against - ag/en/st), he will go "all the way down". (A lot of kids get metaphoric problems with words like against, stupid, faggot, teacher, etc. I work with this stuff.)

Now, I make the assumption that anything I say to my students will eventually reach their parents, most especially when they don't like what I'm doing. I won't have the time to do any real good for Tim if his parents don't like me bringing their kid to the edge of tears, but it's clear that this (and the other big problem) is going to prevent any of my other instructional measure from helping at all. Obviously, his other tutors, specialists, resource teachers, etc, have done nothing to help this kid and assume it's because of these issues.

During the sessions in which I attempt to install the spelling strategy, I have a different problem... Rage. He will refuse to even try to use the visual strategy (the father's eye?) and then will pretend to do it. Variations of the following exchange have halted our practice each time: One time, he resisted coloring the letters, so I asked "what would be a better way to imagine the letters before you slide them into your memory?" He suggested pipes (his father is a plumber). I suggested he do it. And he output a jumble of letters that were in the word, but in the wrong order (while his regular spelling mistakes are the result of the phonetic blur I described). I suggested that perhaps pipes would cause some trouble because they have to be connected to one another in a certain way to work. I dissociated him and he told "that other kid in his class" to try bricks. I suggested he try bricks--"That won't work for me because I don't know anything about bricks!" but he sure does know a lot about plumbing. Every time we've tried it, he gets the same jumble.

He insists that he'll never have to learn to read because he can leave all that to his rich wife and he can work in sewage "Because you don't need to go to college and you feel like shit anyway." His father CAN read just fine (though he's not a smart man), but he needs glasses to do it. Tim "hates the nerds with glasses in [honors classes]". Tim has perfect vision. His brother is smart and wears glasses.

--

I'm very careful with containing the amount of trance/nlp I bring openly into my tutoring work (work which I'm phasing out, but preferably not before I fix these last two most difficult students--the rest were a breeze and honestly, I don't like failure).

There's a lot that I'm aware of that I can work with, and I will in what time I have with this kid, but my time is limited if I don't do something, soon. I had a student, "Jen", that had a much different situation, but just as inhibited with reading, then one session, finally, I put her in a trance, did a core transformation with her, and she had a major (blissful) outburst. She told her mother she wanted to marry me ("Holy shit!" was my reaction) and her mother's reaction was a swift series of threats. The girl e-mailed me two years later. She got 95+ in all of her subjects in her freshman year of high school and she was sorry she got me fired. I suspect me getting fired acted as a convincer more than anything else.

It's the swift series of threats that wizened me to sticking to metaphor in my tutoring sessions (and requiring that I'm not in the house alone). I work covertly, almost entirely with the metaphor of tutoring (which I discovered is an amazing way to facilitate high level change while the conscious mind is just learning to spell a word or "solve a problem"). Sometimes, if I've got enough nested loops, I'll break state into a quick direct technique, suggest amnesia "like that comet on a tangent to earth's orbit back... when was that, again?", and close a few loops.

I've gone through more students because of this kind of change work than any tutor I know has ever had. That said, I've only ever had four of these tough cases. Jen, the little jerk I quit on, and these last two. The other one I'm doing just fine with, but this Tim is by far the hardest.

Any help you can offer would really help enliven my perspective.

Why Cant I Just Use Anchors to Solve All Light Issues?

Why Cant I Just Use Anchors to Solve All Light Issues?

Are there any reasons why i cant simply create a variety of different state anchors and fire them off as and when i need them eg for public speaking?

two other quick questions are how long do anchors last for and how do they not become weakened over a period of using them?

As i just simply want to feel humour and relaxed to overpower nerves and self doubt in certain situations like public speaking.
