Changing States

I recently got ahold of Jonathan Altfeld’s “Automatic ‘Yes’” CD set, the subject of which is the powerful skill called “state chaining”. (I won’t define or describe it here. Hit the link for a full description of the course, and buy your copy before the special sale ends.) I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to the basics of Jonathan’s approach in the Master Practitioner training he co-trained with Doug O’Brien a little while back, and it was something I wanted to play with and get better at doing. Before the end of the training, I realized I’d been doing it in certain contexts all along, in shorter chains, and I hadn’t realized it.

Listening to the CDs reminded me that I’d never really spelled out how I think about how I do it, so I resolved to put it here. I’ll start with one particular aspect: how to shift someone from a high-energy unresourceful state, such as anger, to something a little more flexible.

Many years ago, I was an Emergency Medical Technician working for a private ambulance company, and I was stationed at a state psychiatric hospital. I happened to walk in on a training they were having for their nurses and technicians: Bruce Chapman’s Handle With Care Behavior Management System. I was immediately captivated by Master Bruce’s teaching style and his philosophy. I arranged to take the training for myself. What I’m about to share here is roughly based on something I learned in that class and in much subsequent reading of Chinese philosophical work such as the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu and The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

Tai Chi Tu (click image for SVG source)

Tai Chi Tu (click image for SVG source)

Here we have the Tai Chi Tu, commonly known as the “Yin/Yang symbol”. This is the Taoist in-a-nutshell representation of the way the universe works. You’ve seen it many times, no doubt, but I imagine nobody’s really explained it. I’ll give it a shot.

First, you’ll notice that it’s a circle. No beginning, no end. Now, pick a spot, either at the top or the bottom, where either the black or the white is almost non-existent. Moving clockwise, you’ll see that the color you chose increases while its opposite color decreases… and that as soon as it gets to the point where it can’t hold any more, you’ll see that the opposite color starts to kick in, PLUS, there’s a little “seed” of the opposite color contained in the fullest part of the swell.

Now, I can’t find the citation at the moment, but there’s an old saying that hard winds don’t blow all morning and heavy rains don’t last all day. Physics tells us that energy constantly changes form. Biology tells us that we change or we go extinct. It isn’t just that change always happens; it’s that it must happen. So when I’m in front of an angry person, I know I don’t have to do anything at all to get them to stop being angry. All I have to do is get rapport, pay close attention to when their angry state changes to another state, catch the transition point, and steer it to where I want it to go. The best part is, if I can figure out what the “seed” of the next state is, knowing that it’s already there, I can speak to it… drawing attention, and therefore the other person’s energy, toward it… making sure that it really is what’s next.

Anger, and most other high-energy emotional states, cannot last long. It’s physically impossible to maintain it. It costs too much. Anyone who claims they’ve been angry about something for years and years… they aren’t angry. They may be bitter, but they aren’t angry. Anger is a flash, not a smoulder. (This is one of the ways the psych nurses know when someone is faking a condition, and why we keep people for observation for up to 72 hours.)

Jonathan suggests in the Automatic “Yes” CDs that, to move someone out of a high-energy unresourceful state, we should turn it up rather than try to turn it down. I agree. Several times I’ve been called to the psychiatric unit where I work because a patient is scaring the staff and the other patients despite the fact that he isn’t actually doing anything. He’s got a clenched jaw, closed fists, and knitted brow, and he’s pacing, and he’s been doing it all day. When I respond, all I do is engage the guy in some sort of conversation and then do something that I think will annoy him. Not anger him; just irritate him. It adds energy to his stuck state, and then he has to choose which side of the fence he’s going to crawl off on. Is he going to start throwing things and kicking walls and cursing, or is he going to start talking? As soon as he gets to the decision point, I lead him to the state I want him to have. Usually I just tell him what it is: “It’s gotta be frustrating,” I say, or “I’d be scared too if I were in your place.” Sometimes I offer a path to follow instead: “You just have to wonder what’s going on, but the more questions you ask the more answers you get.”

(Of course, I’m ready if he decides to go the other way, too. It’s never actually happened, but if it does, at least he’ll have resolved his stuck state and can work from there.)

I can take these more energetic states and ride/drive them to something a little more useful for the other person and a lot safer for those around them. Which is, essentially, what state chaining is about.

I strongly recommend Jonathan’s “Automatic ‘Yes’” CD set to you and to anyone else who wants to take their social skills to the next level. And I want to thank him publicly for helping me to think more clearly about one of the things I’ve been doing without realizing it.

The US Federal Trade Commission requires that I add: While Jonathan did ask me for a product review, it should also be noted that I bought my copy of this audio program directly from his Web site, and that my recommendation is not a form of payment for the product.

NLP Numbness?

Hi all,

I wanted to ask about something I've been experiencing while learning some of the skills. A lot of it might just be distorted expectations.

I am having a great deal of difficulty, as of yet, applying some of the tools that generate strong positive feelings and emotions. For example, self-anchoring. The steps are fairly simple: Pick a resource state, elicit it, anchor it, and test. I think it's in the elicitation part that I have a lot of trouble. Let's say I pick motivation. I then think of a time when I felt motivated... and then make the images bigger and more vivid, etc. But as I do that, I never feel like I've increased the feeling of motivation to the point where it's strong enough to anchor. In fact, it barely changes.

The same thing goes for the whole "spin your feeling" thing. I don't think I've ever noticed my feelings having a "spin" to them that I could speed up to really increase them.

I can think of tons of exercises like those that I've tried a few times, with pretty much no results. Like I said, it might just be slightly distorted expectations, but in a way, I feel like I'm a bit numb to these things. Maybe I just need better inner awareness.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who's had these sorts of difficulties when starting out. What are some tips for how I can get past this hurdle and really experience these things fully?

cheers

Learning NLP

Hi Everyone

Ok I know you have probably seen this topic a million times but I seriously need some advice! Sorry in advance but have to ask:blush:

I am new to nlp only heard about it in july. I have been through some cd's(talk about information overload lol) but I really want to study it in a seminar environment because I feel like the cd's just were not enough, I don't know if that makes any sense to you guys but there's certain things that you may feel like you need a person to teach you.

Anyway, there's like so many nlp courses in london where the hell do I go?! Does it make a difference on paying like 6 grand and training with say christopher howard or paul mckenna?
Or do I go to cheaper less known courses like this on NLP Creations - Live The Life You Love!

I mean isn't nlp courses the same subject but taught in different ways? I just want to go somewhere where I will see results and where I will learn how to use nlp. I don't want to do a training where there's a thousand people but how do I know if the cheaper coursers are reputable?

Any suggestions? What experiences have you had as a begginer?

Thanks so much:applause:

Sympathy vs. Respect?

I’ve recently had reason and opportunity to think about the concept of sympathy. The feeling of sympathy, that is, for somebody who is unwell or unhappy or in difficult circumstances. It’s quite normal or natural or understandable to feel sadness or even unhappiness for somebody who is going through a difficult time. And, if this person [...]

Hypnosis for Sex

Are there any books I could read or products I could invest in or steal that would teach me how to put people in a trance without them knowing about it. Specifically, I want to be able to fornicate with a large quantity of only the most attractive women. It seems to me that if I could hypnotize them to some degree it would make this pursuit easier.

Practice Group: Identifying Trigger Points

Course Overview

The Butterfly Effect in action
Have you (or your clients) noticed that some negative behavioural patterns can appear so quickly that in the moment they take over and you lose control? Or some patterns can sneak up so slowly on you (or your clients), you are submerged in a negative behaviour without realising it?
In this practice group you will explore ‘trigger points’ which are the earliest and usually out of conscious body signals of unwanted behaviours. By bringing these trigger points into conscious awareness you can work to create new choices at the trigger point so different outcomes becomes the reality. At this evening you will learn:

  • How to be aware of the earliest trigger points of negative behaviours
  • How to use New Code NLP process to create new choices at the ‘trigger point’
  • How New Code NLP works to maximise state
During the evening you will practice the following skills

  • Calibration – calibrating earliest trigger points
  • Pacing and leading- setting up an intervention with a client
  • Awareness of spatial anchoring
  • Identification and utilization of states
This evening is open to all. People who are experienced in NLP will coach people less experienced. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do. When you understand NLP, you understand your own mind and how to change habits and behaviours that hold you back, into behaviours supporting success.

FREE Talk Meta-Medicine, EFT & Matrix Reimprinting

Emotional Freedom Medicine

Join us this Saturday the 31st of October at 2pm at the stunning Oddfellows Church in Chiswick for a FREE introduction and taster session of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Matrix Reimprinting and Meta-Medicine®. See how these fabulous techniques compliment, deepen and expand your NLP!!

2pm- 6pm, October 31st
Oddfellows Hall, Fletcher Road,
Chiswick, W4 5AS
London

These three techniques are all you need for a life of health, freedom and harmony and used together can heal anything that ails you, while also functioning as powerful stand-alone tools.

EFT and Matrix Reimprinting clear emotional blockages, limiting decisions and unconscious beliefs as well as alleviating phobias, fears, negative habits and unhelpful emotions.

Meta-Medicine® diagnoses the root-cause of all illness and physical pain and finally answers the question, why am I sick?

Whether you are a therapist or someone wanting answers for yourself, friends and family, or someone wanting access to a more empowered life, this day will cause breakthroughs in your thinking and wellbeing.

Emotional Freedom Technique is one of the most exciting and effective energy psychology methods, which offers transformations in all areas of life. Well researched and supported by science, this healing therapy, often described as ‘acupuncture without needles,’ or ‘acupuncture for the emotions,’ gets to the heart of problems and can clear them out in minutes. As Deepak Chopra, MD, said, "EFT offers great healing benefits” and as cell biologist and author, Bruce Lipton, Phd, confirms, "EFT is a simple, powerful process that can profoundly influence gene activity, health and behaviour."

Matrix Reimprinting draws upon the findings of quantum physics and the New Sciences, especially New Biology. It acknowledges that 95% of our daily activities & behaviours are controlled by our subconscious, which is governed by images of past events where trauma and core beliefs were formed. Matrix Reimprinting enables us to change these images and improve every aspect of our life. It is a quick and easy to learn technique that literally changes the environmental signals to which our bodies respond.

Meta-Medicine® is not a therapy but an amazing system that allows you to determine which stressful event causes which illness. Using many types of therapies you can resolve those stressful events and therefore return a person back to wellness. Meta-Medicine® was developed by medical doctors and health practitioners worldwide and through the use of modern CT imaging it has mapped the trapped emotional conflicts that get stuck in the brain and specific organs to their original stressful cause. Finally it answers how and why certain symptoms are there, what caused them and why do specific organs and the brain uniquely react to stress. The medical profession can’t tell you what has caused the majority of diseases but Meta-Medicine® can. It also explains why some diseases just will not heal, how and why our behaviour is affected by these stressful events, what causes cancer and spreading tumours and what are the right therapies to get a person back to complete wellness.

Penny Croal is a multi-disciplined practitioner who passionately believes in the mind-body connection. Modelling Narrative Therapy….?

Does anyone have a reference to the modelling of narrative therapy some years ago which basically pulled out all the common ways of using narrative into a more streamlined way of doing things?

3:HYPNOSIS FOR HAPPINESS STATE NLP 1of 2

Looking for a World of Perfect Inner Calm?

Hi folks,

Still pursuing my study of academic criticisms of what those people think is "NLP" I've just come across a real doozy.

But before I say anything about it I'd like to conduct a very simple poll to get people's views on the purpose of "NLP".

It seems that the late Virginia Satir once wrote that the NLP technique might be part of the "beginning of the end of people relating to each other through force, dictatorship, obedience and stereotypes ... It is a question of whether the old attitudes will die and new ones be born or that civilisation dies out. I [Virginia Satir] am working on the side of keeping civilsation going with new values about human beings. I hope that now you are, too." (People Making, 1972)

Now I know that we're all jolly nice folk on NLPConnections, and of course we would like as little conflict in the world as possible. But is it "NLP"'s primary function to rid the world of ALL conflict, I wonder?

My question, then, is this:

Do you personally reject all suggestions that conflict has anything to do with "unequal resources, systematic patterns of discrimination and respect, or fundamental antagonisms in social life", preferring instead to define conflict as "something that is a deviation from a world of perfect inner calm and communion between our individual mental models"?

If you think conflicts include both internal and external factors, answer "yes"
If you think conflict is "all in yer mind, man" and that contextual factors are irrelevant, answer "no".

And if you want to add any thoughts of your own, thank you.

Be well

Andy B.

Hypnosis Without Trance – Interview!

Hello People!

Yesterday I was asked by Nick Davies of the Warwickshire School of Hypnotherapy to do an interview about my blog project and my approach to hypnosis. I had a great day with Nick, kicking around a load of ideas. Afterwards we did some hypnosis with Nick's cameraman Adam, which Nick captured on my new Flip Ultra. It it ended up being a nice piece of footage, taking the subject by increments from a business card stick all the way up to invisibility – using the principle of the hypnotic ladder. (I will be talking about that and showing the footage on the blog in due course)

For now, enjoy the interview!

James

P.S. Here is a teaser for the 'Hand Stick Tutorial' which should be up today:

Hypnosis Without Trance

Hi from Jay from Nottingham

Hi

:D
Im Jay and just completed Master Prac course with Bandler

I would like to meet other NLP people for practice and discussion in Notts area

Ahh… Scientology HAS Discovered NLP!

In spades, it would appear... nicked this one from the Ex-Scientologist Message Board... this is interesting... there's now a movement of Ex-Scientologists who are bailing out of Scientology and starting their own thing... which looks to have absorbed a goodly dose of NLP into the mix.....

Without further ado..... I give you one thetaCannon:

"(Please, this thread is only for people who recognise the positive aspects of processing and want to understand it in a mainstream scientific context. If you still think in terms of reactive minds, havingness and mental mass, this is not for you.)

I once worked for a puzzle company. While I was there I noticed a striking similarity between the effects people would get from puzzle books that they would from "cognition therapy", otherwise known as auditing. In both cases, the person is presented with a series of novel mental challenges to which they have no automatic response. After a period of increased stress and concentrated exposure, a collapse happens and thinking about the challenge suddenly becomes a lot easier (also freeing up a lot of attention that had been progressively diverted to the task and taken away from everyday matters).

It can be seen on a meter that solving a puzzle or playing a puzzle video game, of the correct level of difficulty, has the same kind of effects that an auditing rundown has. It is the same exact pattern of TA action, rise and rise followed by blowdown that constitutes "negative case gain" in Scientology.

This leads me to believe that a generalised auditing framework is possible, if we can only objectively study the structure of auditing processes and pay close attention to the types of words and phrases used and how they're run.

For instance: homonyms play an important part in auditing commands. In conversational hypnosis, homonyms are used to scatter a subject's attention by invoking "transderivational search", which is the process of figuring out what the speaker means. Sly speakers use homonyms to mask words they don't necessarily want the listeners to register, because they're momentarily occupied with establishing the meaning of the previous sentence.

So as an example "
give me something you wouldn't mind remembering". Here we have the repetitious usage of several homonyms chained together. The question is broad enough that when the mind forms an automaticity to answer it, especially after one or more attention spans had been dedicated to the activity, a significant blowdown would be (and is) observed.

Meter reads are closely correlated to changes in vigilance, and the more homonyms you have to process and formulate a sensible response to, the more vigilant you would tend to become. I believe this is why auditing commands become progressively more nonsensical and abstract as you graduate levels.

Another factor is opposites. This is like the game where you have to alternate between humming the theme tunes to Star Wars and Superman (both composed by John Williams in close succession). Stacked on top of homonyms, you now have opposites.

Hubbard was very interested in scales, and finding words to qualitatively describe degrees of various subjective concepts.

Of course there is also the concept of "buttons" in auditing, whereby emotionally loaded words are thrown into the mix to challenge a subject's mental agility.

Auditing commands come in pairs, often when using opposites, and lists when using degrees or permutations. There's also the concept of flows, which gets the faculties of spatial reasoning and self/other identification involved.

Then we also have the perceptics, which challenge one's visualisation ability.

What I'm interested in is establishing an open-source, generalised version of these Hubbard's trademark "diary puzzles" and turn it into something less than a costly cult trap. Puzzle research says that feel-good chemicals are released when solving crosswords, and that the mental exercise has positive health benefits. I believe that auditing is a more personalised example of a crossword, and one that really ought to be popularised for what it is."

show and tell – clean in the classroom

Between 1999 and 2009 we've been looking at different ways of bringing clean into our classrooms. We'd like to share some practise and to hear what others are doing. Maybe take it in turns and build up a series of resources.
Primary:
When you're learning really well, you're like what? Develop the metaphors using clean questions then ask children to draw them and have them around the classroom. Teachers then use them in poetry and creative writing as well as asking - Bobby How can I help you to be that soaring eagle or Samira what happens just before you're a ticking clock?

Secondary:
How do you become.... Developing a metaphor landscape for getting really angry. Pupils help one another to storyboard their strategies for getting angry and turn it into GCSE art project

Tertiary:
Students develop metaphor models for how they organise time, make decisions, get inspired and learn at their best. They share these models in small tutprial groups and coach one another to learn and study at their best

Tertiary - Trainee Teachers
Offering PE teachers the clean feedback model both to use with pupils during PE lessons and also to teach pupils to use with one another. This helps pupils develop their ability to articulate what they're seeing and hearing and why it is and isn't working.

What are some other people doing?

New, with Lots to Learn

Hello nice people of NLPC.

Having qualified in June, in NLP and Hypnotherapy, I am just beginning to sort myself out, as to which areas interest me:?

I am particularly interested in pain control, especially in children and in cases of chronic illness. I have had clients with Crohn's disease and with IBS. I would be pleased to hear other people's experiences.

I am a member of the Society of Medical NLP - their founder and training director, Garner Thomson, has been a huge inspiration to me for quite some time. In fact, I am attending their course in Nottingham in November.

Best wishes to you all.

Paul

Please Could You Answer These Qs & Also Relate to NLP?

I am doing a study on NLP and hypnotherapy at uni, just need a variety of answers from different people

How much are your hypnotherapy sessions?

how long does a session usually take? and how many sessions are needed?

do you feel people are predisposed to being hypnotised? (i.e. believe it works?)

what percentage of people is it effective with?

how often do you treat people? i.e. is it a popular form of help?

what kinds of problems do people need the therapy for?

Is the effect long lasting? or does it wear off?

how can you tell the person is genuinly hypnotised?

what are the procedures and techniques you practice on people? are they similar to the next person or totally different? is it the same method?

how does it generally work? what does it do to their minds and way of thinking? can it damage the mind atall?

Could you also answer these but relate them to NLP aswell

Thanks!
