NLP Beginner Wants to Fix Himself!

Hi guys,

I'm fascinated with NLP and have done quite a bit of reading up on the subject over the years and can really see how it can help and understand many of the principles. Unfortunately I just can't seem to actually put any of it into practice on myself.

I suffer on and off with anxiety, especially anything performance related (presentations, meetings, groups of people etc). More recently it has got even more stupid to the point where I have become very self-conscious about just talking in general. i.e. rather it being a sub-conscious activity I have been actually thinking about what I say at a conscious level and as such making myself even more anxious. All of this is just trashing my self confidence.

Where would you experts start with something like this ? I simply need to go back to communicating becoming a "subconsciously competent" activity rather than a conscious one as it is turning into.

Any pointers/tips/starting points much appreciated!

Reverse Meta Model: Unspecified Adjectives

Here’s an example of an unspecified adjective:

 ”Feel that special feeling.”

“Special?” How specifically is it special? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Is it special because of it’s rarity? Are you saying “special” because it’s sinfully wonderful but you can’t say that? Especially with the unspecified noun that follows (a nominalization, actually), the speaker is leaving a LOT of room for interpretation.

Because it is unspecified, the speaker will not know exactly how the listener will interpret that sentence, but can be confident they will chose something special. In fact, if you’re doing a group induction everyone will feel something “special” and it might well be different for everyone, and yet they all feel as though you are talking directly to their experience.

Some other unspecified adjectives: (it is arguable that all adjectives are somewhat unspecific. Even if a person said “that was fantastic chile,” We wouldn’t really know exactly how good it was. Some adjectives are, however, more unspecified than others. Tonality will play a big role in the meaning communicated.)

  • fine (Melissa saw it in fine detail.)
  • memorable (They had a memorable evening.)
  • interesting (Helen had an interesting experience.)
  • challenging (Joel had a challenging teacher.)
  • fun (Annie sent a fun memo.)
  • You get the idea. Your being nonspecific does two things for you: 1. Your client will need to resolve the confusion that is engendered and 2. you will not be inadvertently speaking contrary to their experience.

Now go out there and practice with people. And have fun.

    Hello From UK Clinical Hypnotherapist

Hello everyone!  I am Jon from the UK.  I have been a clinical hypnotherapist for 8 years.  I run many popular hypnotherapy related site such as htp://www.HypnoBusters.com ; http://www.AllHypnosisDownloads.com; and http://www.HypnosisArticlesDirectory....

“On Your MIND, Get Set GO…”

A regular gambler, forayed into betting where a wrestling match was happening. He saw all people put money on the favorite fat shorty Sumo-styled wrestler. There was heavy odds-money offered if the thin, lanky , shifty-stanced ; yet confidently taller dusky lad of a wrestler. He asked the punter-offerer,"Whats his price." Punter-owner said;"Oh, he man cannot say if you may lose more money on him; but his 1$ invest --gets yaa 180$." The regular gambler played on his seasoned-whiskers, and then put in all hismoney on the young lad. The match gave a fluke turn of events and the fat wrestler sprained a left -leg in a move and was won-over by the attention focussed lad-wrestler.

This regular gambler collected his moolah, and went again next to a racecourse where the Great Derbyshire Derby was happening. Seven horses were promising bets. But, he cranked his mind into "on your MIND ,GET SET GO,..." and placed his seasoned bet on the wildhorse---VICARON; whom none had laid bet upon seeing his new entry and no past run-track record. The price here was 1$ to get !!!!!......a 1000$. The race was a gruelling onslaught of nerves. His friends also told him --Vicaron has no chances. But, this regular gambler laid all his earlier won money till the last quarter on this horse. The last furlong track saw the horse jumstart ahead by 100m and the nearest trailing horse was the all time favorite ---BISHOP (Bet priced--1$ gets 20$).

Everyone had put in the money on Bishop, but the horse lost to VICARON by a neck burst.

Sometimes , in NLP too we face similar trying situations. Whenever we apply such tricks and rules we are on our own in a new ground everyday. But, a seasoned belief in NLP will always carry us ahead in life. What say you ? :)

    Revision for Exams

Hi, Does anyone know of a technique i could use to revise masses of information for exams?, i have read quite a few books on NLP and attended the recent 3 day course in Wembley.

“A Thought Moves Faster Than Feelings.”

"People say dont worry or dont think about a problem"

"I wont think about it," we may say about any problem but then are we not thinking in the mind on it.

We feel focussed , when we think about anything in a relaxed manner. maybe with the help of some meditation or relaxation audio-tapes.

Dr.Milton H. Erickson once said,"Think a thousand things, thats what you've already done. Now relax and go back to that good event or thing which you thought was nice , good-news to you." [ Here, Erickson has put us in the feel mode, isn't it ? ]

Playing of Circus music , loudly in your mind-tape makes the dissappointing feelings to a big-deal problem just dissappear. They may also become slightly humorous. The Movie-exercise also does the same.

I want to know from your personal experiences whatever Thoughts that were bid-deal problems and disappointed you, Then your Brain used NLP affirmations and you learnt to change "THE MAP or TERRITORY"

Modelling on someone's map, and making it another's territory is what has been done by all. School children model themselves on the classroom lectures of their favorite teacher. So do the College graduates, whence they hear the Lectures quite monotonously.

NLP Publisher – The Most Rewarding Thing We Do is NLP

    Hi all,

We're a medium sized publishers in North London and we have to date published five NLP based books - and of all the work we do its the most rewarding, gratifying and envigorating.

We read every review of our books, professional and indeed personal ones on Amazon etc - and many are life changing. Our first foray into NLP was Seeing Spells Achieving (2006) which applies NLP for learning difficuties. Currently, and for the last year, the book has been the UK's No.1 book for communicative disorders with thousands of children in particular having their learning difficulties transformed. A big thanks to BORDERS who had the vision in 2007 to allow us to have a national tour across the UK where we invited teachers, parents and community leaders to workshops in their stores where we met thousands of children with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, Downs Syndrome and Autism.

You Too Can Do Health (2008) signalled the move into critical trauma and in particular patients battling illnesses like cancer. The reaction to the book made us very humble and wonderful endoresments from leading NLP experts like Art Giser have begun to get some traction - we can only hope that the book will have the same exposure as the first. Written by two master pratcitioners battling cancer themselves the book is having a big impact wherever it is used.

This May the next subject area was Chronic Fatigue and ME with the book Recover Your Energy (2009) and the book has been an instant hit, especially in the US where we have been unable, as yet to get coverage for the first two.

We hope to hear from community members with their thoughts and ideas and those of you that have used the books as practictioners if you can take a moment to review them online and share the success - every little helps.

In case you are wondering we also publish Sherlock Holmes, Motor Racing, Victorian Literature, Property Books and Children's Books - all good and fun, but not like NLP which has us burning the midnight oil and posting things on a Sunday morning.

    Kind Regards,

    Steve

The Blatantly Obvious (”The Secret” Parody)

London practise group – NLP Reframing exercises

What is reframing? How can I use it? How will we practice it?

‘you control the situation, the situation does not control you.’

    What is reframing?

Events do not have meaning. We give meaning to events. Our actions and feelings following events depend on the meaning we give to the event. Normally this meaning is given unconsciously. In NLP we can call this meaning of the event the ‘frame’. So if you choose to change the frame, you change the meaning for yourself and therefore your emotions and actions.

Change the frame * change the emotion * change the action * change the outcome

Example: feeling overwhelmed with a task. Reframe your thoughts from “I can’t cope with this massive task” to “I will break the task down into tiny little manageable chunks, do them one at a time and think about how proud I will feel when the task is finished”.

    So what!

Some people may ask ”So what if you think positive thoughts, it won’t change the situation!”. Positive thoughts are not always enough to change a situation. However reframing the situation can put you into a powerful and positive emotional state. This positive state will help you and others to access their skills, imagination and motivation and then change the outcome.

    Knee Jerk positive reframe

This is where you want to get to. If you reframe you own experiences in a consistently positive way, you will gradually learn an unconscious and automatic positive reaction to events.

Once you have developed this automatic positive reaction to events, it will be picked up by other people on an unconscious level.

    The meetup

I will provide a handout with examples of reframing. We will do some quick exercises were you can write down lots of different reframes for some common events.
We will then work in pairs. One person describes an event, the other person then offers a number of different ways to look at the event. We will practise how to use the reframe technique in your business and personal life. We will practise using the reframe both on ourselves and with other people.

Robert Dilt’s Book ‘The Magic of Conversational Belief Change’ will be referred to.

    Adding Brilliance NLP

    NLP Adding Brilliance

Story= " A man called Mullah Nasrudin Hodja , once went to the village near Khartoum. There were several villagers assembled under a big Banyan Tree. It was mid-afternoon, and summer heat. The presence of a crowd did not surprise Nasruddin ,but he pressed on further to see whatever was happening.

A young man was arguing with an old-villager, who seemed in tattered clothes well over years of wisdom, aged 78 years. The young lad said: " I am the bread-winner now in the family of twelve members. Now that you are old and of no use and have also feeble memory, you should go out and feed or look after yourself.I will care for you no more now." Old man replied :" My son, do not throw me away yet , for I may bring you more help in times of your need."

But, the young lad was stay-put ; and would not yield even to theVillagers gently helping in the discussion to why the Old-man should not be thrown out of the house he so lovingly built and nurtured,............

.........PLEASE help me in completing this story, as it will be a wonderful seen sharing. God Bless you all.

    “Ross, Tear Up That Check!”

    Dear Speed Seduction® Student,

As you may know, I offer a very high-quality coaching program for those students smart enough to sign up.

Part of that program includes monthly office hours; one Sunday out of each month I open up my cell phone for 90 minutes.  The next 90 minutes after that, members can talk to me on live video to video in my Megameeting on-line video conferencing system.

What you are about to read is a post that was made today on the member’s discussion board from a student, reporting how my advice really worked out for him.

    Enjoy.

“Last month in the mega meeting, Ross challenged me to do 10 Manny Martian walkups. I wrote out a thousand dollar check to Greenpeace and sent it to him, to seal my commitment to getting over my inability to approach.

I had till June 1st. Ross threatened to kick me off if I didn’t do it, but if I did, I’d be invited to the next SS seminar! Last night, I did 3 walkups in a 15  minute burst; tonight I did my last 2.

It started out much more difficult than I imagined. It seemed like such a simple, stupid exercise, but it was a struggle at first. I went out several times without making a single approach. I made sure to transmute my frustration and learn from every outing though, and that was the key to my success! it made it easier to get back out into the field and it showed me that I needed to add in more fun/playful energy. I reinforced the beliefs almost daily and listened to the mp3s from this site as I drove each day.

    Stuff I learned:

*It does get easier with practice. Walkup #5 was easier than #1, etc.

*I didn’t have a single negative response. Most were baffled, and asked me to repeat it. They were still baffled after that. I thanked them and walked off, and they still looked baffled, lol.

*I can maintain good eye contact with HBs.

*I increased the number of smiles I do. I feel more relaxed.

    * Pre-sarge rituals get better with practice too.

    * Post-sarge NYIG is golden. As is keeping a sarge journal.

    * No one else in the world cares what I’m up to. When the walkups are over, life goes on, no big deal.

    * Ross is brilliant: his learning mindset of focusing on what was done right is such a radically different orientation. It took me a while to warm up to the idea due to cultural conditioning, but once I got it, it changed how I see myself and the world…

Cream of the crop belief that also helped changed my mindset:

“I always start at the very least, from the very best I have done so far.” I plan on generalizing this belief out to the professional areas of my life.

My next step is to increase my aggressiveness and diminish my hesitation states. It’s very random: tonight I approached the first girl right away, but the second had me hesitating. When I get into that mode, it can take forever. Anyone have any tips for increasing my “just go for it” mentality?

Anyway, that’s it for now, thanks Ross, please rip up my check,

    and F*** Greenpeace!

Ok. RJ here again. Wasn’t that great? I really love it when guys get breakthrough results following my advice.  Look at how much this guy has not only changed his actions in the world, but his orientation towards focusing on what he is doing right and how he can continue to get better at it.  That’s one hell of a shift from where he was.

If you find yourself wanting to check out the coaching program, you can have a look for free right here.

    Peace and piece,

    RJ

P.S.  The Manny The Martian routine goes like this, “Hi. I just wanted to tell you(pause), my name, is Manny(pause) Martian(extend your hand to shake hers)  “What’s your favorite(pause)….flavor(pause)…bowling ball?”   It’s designed to get you off your ass and talking to women and to teach you that you can say the most dumb-ass, nonsense stuff and still get women to talk to you.

‘how’ You ‘do’ Problem Vs. Finding Root Cause

i was just wondering peoples views about whether a problem is best to be addressed with 'how' they 'do' the problem and just ignore any reasons and why they do it vs finding the root cause and resolving it by facing it as an adult with new resources and understandings and also finding positive intentions behind the problem behaviour and maybe avoiding possible consequence problems developing through ignoring it?

    Self-deception, self-delusion, self-denial

I recently received a question from a group who had downloaded an NLP Conference presentation given by Penny and myself on self-deception, self-delusion, self-denial (download available from www.cleanchange.co.uk/store/).

The group had tried the exercise and found that the last part didn't make sense to them (see exercise in part 1 Self-deception, self-delusion, self-denial also see part 2 Learning how to act from what you know to be true).

    They asked:
Just a query about the last question in the ddd handout.....

Four of us got together to listen and explore the exercise. We witnessed two sessions and found that we were all a bit baffled by the last question....
"How can you learn from whether (gesture to D - desired outcome) happens - or not?".
The first person who got asked was left blank by this and the second person dropped to a space where neither options seemed particularly relevent - but without discovery of how they learn as such.

We discussed it a bit and had a sense of two possibilities of the intention in the question. One going to a meta level of understanding and the other pointing toward responsibility. But we didn't arrive at a satisfactory sense of understanding with it or comfort with the wording.

So, just thought I'd write and ask if you could you throw light on it for us?
    I replied:
Great to hear that your tried the Self DDD activity. I admire anyone who is prepared to consider their own self-DDD. I hope the download and the exercise had some valuable effect even if the last question didn't make much sense.

The two key things to realise is (a) self-DDD is by its very nature a slippery subject to get hold of; and (b) by the time you get to this question you should be several levels up the self-reflection chain. This is a meta-meta-meta-level question and it only makes sense in that rarified atmosphere.

The question acknowledges the fact that in the world of self-DDD you can never be sure that a self-DDD pattern isn't still operating in the background (or will not start operating at some later date). The only reliable way to check is to regularly consult "undeniable evidence" of actual outcomes that manifest in the physical world (and in that I most definitely include sensory-based experiences of interactions with other human beings).

To make sure that the desired outcome we have set for ourselves and our ability to monitor how we are achieving that outcome (or not) are not themselves subject to self-DDD we need a frame that says: I will learn from whatever happens — whether I achieve my desired outcome or not. That way our actual behaviour and the effect it has on the world, ourselves and other people can become a revealer of hidden self-DDD patterns or a confirmation of our progress. This requires us to, as Jim Collins says, "confront the brutal facts" which as you say requires us to take responsibility for our behaviour (regardless of the thousands of justifying explanations that come from asking 'why?').

I assume you have looked at our two articles on the subject. In part 2 we list '21 ways' to counter the effects of self-DDD and live our lives from what we know to be true. You'll see that the examples at Level 4 (#17-#20) are of a different class to those that come before. This reflects the qualitative difference of operating from this level.

You ask about our intention for this question, and that's a nice modelling question. Our purpose is to close any loopholes that might let you off the hook of your own "fearless moral inventory" (as they say in the 12 step program of AA). Whether you set the 'right' desired outcome or not, whether you achieve your outcome or not, whether it is easy or difficult, whether there appears to be an endless supply of hidden self-DDD patterns or not, whether things go well or not, whether you are hit by your worst-ever crisis or not, nothing, absolutely nothing, as we say in #20 is a reason to refrain from applying the process to whatever happens.

If that stance is maintained then, slowly, slowly, the excess baggage of self-DDD processes can be jettisoned to be replaced by a bedrock of knowing that you are genuinely continuing to learn to act from you you know to be true.

    My very best wishes,

    James
